Shelly is horrified to discover a shirt belonging to her husband, violent trucker Leo Johnson, covered in blood. After James, Bobby, and Bobby’s friend Mike Nelson are released from custody, James asks his uncle, mechanic Ed Hurley, to seek protection from the "Bookhouse Boys". Cooper and Truman interrogate James, who reveals he knew Laura was a cocaine addict, but that she had been recovering until a relapse in the previous week. Staying at the Great Northern Hotel, Cooper meets Audrey Horne, the unruly teenage daughter of the hotel's owner, prominent businessman Benjamin Horne.
